Smirnoff Vodka (unreleased)
As a full-time typeface designer for Hoefler & Frere-Jones from 2001 to 2005, I designed a full type family for Smirnoff Vodka (art directed by J. Walter Thompson and H&FJ). Working closely with Tobias Frere-Jones and Jonathan Hoefler on a number of other typefaces, I designed bits and pieces such as hairline weights, Italics, and news grades. It was a privilege to contribute to several of the most popular new typefaces of the ’00s.
The experience cultivated in me an eye for detail, a fondness for designing collaboratively, and an appreciation for the balance between history and innovation.
The typefaces to which I made substantial contributions are listed at left. Among other honors my work for H&FJ has received, in 2011 Gotham and Mercury were acquired into the Museum of Modern Art’s permanent collection.
